BOMBANANA! Communication — Callouts That Actually Work

The game does not give you a callout system. Lefto Studio say so on the store page: "We don't impose any methods: wave, shout, throw bananas. Working out how you communicate is your job."
So the difference between a group that clears levels and a group that keeps exploding is almost never puzzle skill. It is whether you agreed on words before the timer started.
Agree on these four things first
1. One person owns "left" and "right." Left from whose point of view? Pick one — normally the blind player's, since they are the one reaching for it — and never switch mid-round.
2. Numbers are read one digit at a time. "One four" not "fourteen." Every group that skips this eventually types 41.
3. Colours get confirmed back. The deaf player says the colour, the mute player confirms it before looking it up. Colourblind mode exists and is worth turning on; it adapts colours across objects and the UI for two types of colour blindness.
4. "Stop" means stop. Agree on one word or one emote that freezes everyone's hands. You will need it.
The order that wastes the least time
- Blind describes the shape and position of the module they are touching.
- Deaf reads what is printed on it — colours, symbols, digits.
- Mute finds the matching page and signals the answer.
- Deaf relays the answer to the blind player.
- Blind confirms what they are about to do before doing it.
Step 5 is the one groups drop first and regret most.
Where it goes wrong
- Two people talking at once. The deaf player hears nothing and the mute player cannot interrupt. Only one voice at a time actually lands.
- Describing instead of naming. "The thing with the lines" costs ten seconds every time. Name the modules once and reuse the names.
- Forgetting the mute player cannot ask a question. They can only answer what you thought to tell them. If they seem stuck, you probably left something out.
- Environmental hazards. Power outages, loud noises and obstructions are part of the game and are designed to break your communication. When one hits, stop and re-establish rather than pushing through.
Emotes are part of this
Every player has an emote wheel, and the mute player is going to live on it. Agree on what a few gestures mean before you start — pointing, a yes, a no, a "wait". Slapping is also in the game, and while it is not a callout system, it is a very effective way of getting someone's attention.
